Bus Ride IARC style!

So I have to admit, I thought the new studio assignment was a little crazy and out of the ordinary. I was thinking, “Take a city bus and record and draw about how we’re feeling?” how does this have anything to do with design or architecture? My adventure led me to understand why the professors assigned us this task.

To start off I didn’t know that understanding the bus schedule would be so complicated! My younger brother takes the city bus to and from school every day in Jacksonville, Florida and has no problem doing it. I actually called him yesterday and told him that he’s pretty smart to be able to understand what bus takes you where, and at what times and so on. Once I found a bus route that was near campus and that I was familiar with we set out on our adventure! So me, Robert, Kevin and Lauren decided that route 9 would pick us up at Aycock and Walker, take us to the depot downtown and we could catch another bus back to our starting point. Honestly, we had no idea what we were doing and we stood at the corner of Aycock and Walker for about 30 minutes in the blistering sun. After we realized that the bus we wanted to take didn’t come thankfully a girl told us which bus we could take and we waited some more. Finally, we saw the bus! We all approached the bus not knowing what to expect. At first I felt like an idiot because I got on the bus and asked the driver if students ride free and he said yes and to swipe my card. Easier said than done! It took me a minute to realize where to swipe and I could literally feel everyone staring at me thinking, why the hell is this girl holding us up? Then it was time to sit down, and to my surprise the bus was full of people, thankfully Jayson just happened to be on the same bus and gave me his seat, which was so sweet of him! It took me a minute to take it all in, the height at which we were off the ground, the rumbling of the bus, all the different people and sights to look at. For some reason in America we have this misinterpretation that only poor people or homeless ride the city buses, and I’m here to say, they are wrong. There’s was all kind of people on the bus. Nurses, students, men with suits on who looked like they meant business, and of course you do have some people that looked a little less fortunate than others, but they were still friendly. I was surprised at how people talked to us and how I didn’t feel as uncomfortable as I did when I first boarded. I felt weird at first about taking pictures and what all of them would think of me, and then I realized, who cares! They can think I’m weird if they want to. I took a few photographs along the way that helped me to record where we had started from and where we were headed. I have to admit, it was nice to be able to ride and look at everything, I’m normally the one to do the driving. We finally arrived out our destination, the depot downtown Greensboro. We thought for a few minutes on which bus we were supposed to take and then decided, what the hell, we can just take the same bus back to where we started. I was being to understand that the buses go in a big circle around the city, I thought to myself, “I wonder if the bus drivers get sick of seeing the same old things everyday”. Upon our arrival back to Aycock and Walker we talked about how the bus ride wasn’t too bad, and I’m actually considering taking the bus to and from school on Tuesdays and Thursdays now, why not-it’s free, from what I saw safe and it will save on money, and help the environment.

So I realize looking back that we set out on a quest to learn more about our surroundings, people and more about Greensboro as a whole. Not only that but it was a completely different experience to be able to ride and take pictures rather than try to drive by myself and take them! Overall I liked the assignment and was glad to take part in the department of transportation.

I'd Rather be Traveling....

This summer was great for me because I was able to travel a lot. I went to Florida to visit family, South Carolina and best of all New York. It was a blast to take a road trip with my brother and sister all the way to the Big Apple, and to see family I haven't seen in years. With that being said it was hard for me to want to come back the first week of class, I just wanted to be traveling! However, I feel like the first week went pretty good for me and I actually enjoyed the wayfinding assignment. Working with all the students on Friday was crazy and I think will be a huge challenge this semester, but I'm looking forward to this year and learning new things!

Somewhere out there..Elsewhere!

So in our drawing class we traveled to a place here in Greensboro called Elsewhere. At first we were all a little freaked out by the amount of junk, dust and old dolls found within Elsewhere. We soon learned that Elsewhere is a museum and that all of the junk, and misc. items once belonged to perhaps the biggest pack rat of all time. An older woman loved to collect "things" off all sorts..from dolls to fabrics, from records to car speakers, you'll find it all. Her grandson, with the help of others turned grandma's messy space in to what is now a place for travelers to visit, an artist spot, and an interactive museum that welcomes people to play and move things around. Our assignment was to first choose different areas, or items that we would like to draw. Then as a class we taped off the 1st floor and were each designated an area to draw. After visiting Elsewhere a few times it became less creepy and more a cool place to go and draw. There's one thing for sure, you won't ever run out of items to draw!!

Tada! After lots of blood, sweat and tears we finally made it! It was hard work but overall I think were are all happy with the outcome and learned a lot!

Working together on our board

We chose to use a black background to help our images pop out, and used red, blue and green to accent which were the colors we used in our diagrams. We felt that the diagrams were very important so we situated them at the top and middle of the presentation. We also used strips of paper to create a band throughout all 3 boards to tie them all together.

For this assignment we were put into groups and given a building to research, draw, create diagrams to better understand the building, and create presentation boards with all of our information. The building we were assigned was Mossman. The building has a "brutalist" design, meaning it isn't very user friendly and not welcoming to people. However, this building is where student activities, the cashier and registrars offices are, as well as the chancellor's office. Our group had a hard time finding interesting images to draw, but once we arranged all of the info we had we were pleased with the outcome and learned that WORKING IN GROUPS IS NOT AS EASY AS WE ALL THOUGHT!!
I love the way they used circles to create the border for this drawing! In Mossman the information desk is circular so I figured this style would work good for my drawing....this is the view from the 2nd floor.

So the above drawing is much more detailed but I enjoyed working within the circle...who know maybe my next thumbnails will be circles??
I was drawn to this style because I think it's fun and the drawing gets the point across without having to be "perfect." It's also interesting that some of the lines look straight and others you can tell were free handed, so I decided to mix and match like they did....
This view is of a couple of benches, a table and a few plants from the 2nd floor. I think I should have even gone messier than I did but I enjoyed this drawing and I like how the artist illustrates the plants, it's fun!

I tried to make the doors and bench very straight forward like the drawing and then used the same method on the tree to mimic the drawing as well.

To Color or not to Color? That is the question...

These are my favorite "clutter" drawings! I liked this assignment but I'm having a hard time deciding whether I should use color or not...for example, the first one I did in pen first and I think it looked a lot better than it does now! I used Chartpak markers and I'm not used to them yet so the color is out of the lines etc. With the second drawing I tried the markers again and the same thing happened...so on the next one I decided...NO COLOR!! I think it turned out okay, I know practice with shading and hatching will help.

Wow I actually feel like I'm improving!! I enjoyed this exhibit because everything was the same color gray and it was a lot easier to focus on the contour, and the colors weren't there to distract me.

Practice Never Hurts!

I think these forms were fun to do and were my favorite both in pen and pencil! It's cool how we I combined all three shading techniques on the same form, it really gives it great depth and makes it very unique!! Pretty cool huh?

On these exercises from the book we used pencil to use hatching, crosshatching, squiggle and smudge to shade in these shapes...I did a few extra because practice, practice, practice will hopefully pay off for me! I think the polygons turned out the best out of these...

These are some shapes done in pen, I actually prefer to use pencil for these exercises!

After the Ai3 speech on Wednesday we all went out to dinner to Phoenix Asian Cuisine..and it was really yummy! Anyhow, after I got a take out box and we were sitting around talking I started to doodle on my box and thought hey....practice everywhere! And check it out...diagonal, crosshatching and random shading on my box!! I thought it was pretty cool and everyone said...put it on your blog!! Me, Melia, Zach, Katrina, Karis, Anna, Sara & Ben A. all ate together....fun, fun, fun!

Tut Tut it Looks Like Fall

Being from Florida I've never experienced the seasons changing really, the cold winters or the leaves all changing colors...it's beautiful to drive down the street and see all the yellows, oranges, reds and greens in the leaves. This is just a drawing for fall, nothing special...

Shading it up!

So we started something new and fun today...shading!! They taught us different ways of shading and set up this composition in class for us to draw. We were to focus on the different values and take note of where the light hits the objects and make those spaces lighter. I like how this turned out, although I think I should have used some darker values. The shading method I used here was the diagonal lines.
This shading is of a clover patch I found outside my apartment....I thought they were all so beautiful and unique in their own way so I tried to capture them using different values and shading them in. I used the smudge and diagonal method on this one mostly. However, in person you can really see all the different values better. Overall I think these are pretty good and I'm looking forward to shading more and more!

From Pencils to Petals: Metamorphosis Project

Here are some photos that really let you see the change! I think when you put them side by side you can see how they warp into different forms and in the end I feel like I really showed the metamorphosis of their projects.

This next step was the hardest for me...how can I take my middle example and make it more like Hannah's without being exactly like her project?? I decided to keep the textured paper throughout the metamorphosis. However, instead of a mat board base I chose to use cardboard like Hannah did. I made and egg like shape (like Hannah's) but left one edge of the shape a corner, to still represent a part of Eriko's box. On the corner part I included a few petals with the red and black from Eriko's project. As far as the rest of the petals, I left them natural colored and weaved them through the bottom like Hannah did in her project.

Petals, Petals everywhere! So this is the prototype that became my in-between project. I still used the rectangular shape of the box as my base, mat board and the textured paper from Eriko's box, but included many more petals from Hannah's project and used the colors from both. I think this one seems even more open and is a good medium for both.

So here are some shots of my first iteration...I took the textured paper, shape, and black mat board used in the pencil box and mixed it in with the petals from the egg project, which I did in both the natural color Hannah used and the red and black from Eriko's box. I also used cardboard for the sides since Hannah used cardboard for her base. I wanted it to feel open and I think I did a nice job of it. However, after the first critique we determined that because of the shape, texture and color this example leans more towards Eriko's than Hannah's, so I had to come up with another "middle" example.

Metamorphosis: a complete change of form, structure, or substance (www.dictionary.com) hmm...so we are supposed to take two projects completed by our classmates and show we we take a little from each and mix them together...this is a lot easier than it sounds! The above pictures are the two projects I chose...Eriko's pencil box, and Hannah Coble's egg project...I like the colors used in Eriko's box and the simplicity of her design. With Hannah's I appreciate the natural feel it has and the way it shows the shape of the egg. To combine them I noticed that they are both very open and neither of them have a lid, so that was the quality I chose for my first iteration.

Coming Clean...Zine Layout 1st Edition

So our assignment here was to focus on composition. Thumbing through magazines there are a lot of different layouts and ideas to choose from. I chose to focus on bathroom design because it's different and there are so many variations seen across the board. I enjoyed finding the photographs and wishing that I had a bathroom like some of these! If I had to do anything differently I would have taken more time as far as putting the zine together and I would have typed the text, which I think would have made "Coming Clean" look a lot more clean! Overall, I am satisfied with my product...stay tuned for the 2nd edition!

Studio Layout!

This is my studio layout, which I love how it turned out! So what is studio anyway? To me studio is made up of so many things...late nights, junk food, energy drinks, LACK OF SLEEP, we're all in it together! Ideas, PROJECTS, glue, markers, exacto knives, mat board, our own workspace, friends, music, the list goes on and on! When I saw the original layout I thought it was a great way to display ideas and that I could use this layout to compile all of my feelings on what studio is, and that it wouldn't necessarily have to be in an organized way...because we all know studio isn't always that organized! =)

Strong & Lovable...Memory Box

So here it is, I actually love the final product! I used white mat board for the exterior and chose to use spikes to show the rigidity of Nanny, and then in the inside I used a soft, red material as well as polyester fill to make the inside soft. I like the red because it shows love and contrasts the white nicely. I also used one spike to create a latch for the box itself so that, when closed you see only the white spike exterior and then when you open the box (like Nanny's personality) you see the loving, nurturing, giving side. I like how this turned out because I feel it shows who she is in an abstract way. If I had the chance to do it over I would focus more on my craftsmanship but other than that I'm happy!

This is my 2nd iteration and really tried to show the stubborn/strong willed/strict side as well as the lovable side..so here it is! I used white mat board for the s/s/s if you will, and the other side is made of soft material and polyester filling, so its soft to the touch. I liked this one okay, but wasn't very happy with the shape itself, so I decided to do something a little more abstract which brings me to ....ta da..my final project....
So the next thing I did was came up with words that described my grandma. She was a great lady, and there were so many things that I wanted to say about her but I had to narrow it down...so I chose to show the stubborn, strong willed, strict side of her, as well as the lovable, gentle, nurturing side that I love and remember so well. Nanny was a great friend, grandma, mother etc. but was a little rough around the edges. If she didn't know you she might come off a little unfriendly, but once you got to know her she would show her soft side. That leads me to my 2nd iteration.

Assignment: Create a container that holds a memory..hmm...hold a memory? How the hell do you do that? Well I narrowed down my memory to my grandma and went from there. The following is my parti and my first iteration. At first I brainstormed and came up with all the things that remind me of her....coffee, football, shopping are just a few...and she a was a huge card player. So my first idea was to create a card box that held cards , each card having something that reminded me of her. I also had the idea to create a card box and inside have pieces that remind me of her. After the first iterations I felt like I was showing what she liked, but not really showing who Nanny was. The next step, who was Nanny anyway?

The Scary Side of Me

I actually enjoyed this assignment! We had to turn off all the lights, sit in front of a mirror and shine a light on one part of our face. Then we had to use white colored pencil on black paper to draw what we saw. It was quite a challenge and almost a different way of thinking because we have been using pencil or pen or white paper up until this point. Even though this looks like something from a horror film I think I got the point of the assignment...thinking outside the box!

Pencil Box

Aww the good old pencil box assignment. Simple assignment, design a box of some sort to hold pencils, pens, etc. I did some research and found that the old way of making pencils was pretty unique and I actually tried to mimic that in my project. A rectangular piece of wood was carved out for the graphite, the graphite was chopped off and then a "top" piece of wood was placed on top to form a rectangle with the graphite in the middle. I chose to use mat board for this project, and painted the outside so it looks more like wood rather than paper. I then scored the edges of the box, folded it, and glued the last edge. I also made the graphite a drawer that held the pencil so that the space wasn't wasted; and inside was another compartment that you could put your eraser, sharpener etc. on. Overall I wish I had created something more creative but I was happy with what I had done.

Someone also made the comment that the other lady in the background looks like Skeeter from Doug lol!

The shadows make this one look kinda like a spider to me...watch out, he might try to get you!
I'm actually happy with how my egg project turned out. I like how the legs look all crazy but at the same time look nice and clean. I think this would make a cool looking statue on a larger scale. Also, the egg is being stabbed by one of the legs which I think looks very dramatic in the pictures...

So our assignment was to do a negative space drawing of an upside down bicycle...and I did it! I can't believe I actually drew a bike, this negative space thing is really helping me to see the object in a different way...so it's not really a bike, its a series of lines and shapes that surround the bike...

Favorite Sketchblog

The sketchblog that really captured my attention was www.wagonized.typepad.com. I enjoyed how he organized all of his artwork. He had a tab for artwork done in pen, pencil, paint etc. and it was easy to look through his artwork. I think he is a phenomenal artist and he has a very distinct style. I loved his drawings of people, they are all so life like. His drawing of "Keith" was so real that I felt like I was looking at the real person. In addition to people he displayed a lot of different places, items, animals and cars that he has drawn. I think he has a very well rounded blog and I look forward to what he posts next!
